New Project Is Latest Recognition Of MTD’s Accuracy

A West Midlands precision engineering firm is producing components for the A380 after tying up another deal with one of the world’s largest aerospace companies.

Midland Tool and Design has secured their latest project with a major Tier 1 aircraft component supplier to produce core pack laminations for electrical power systems on the giant plane.

It is the 10th time the Tipton-based company has linked up with the firm in the past five years. All of their work has involved aircraft components, which have to be ground to within a micron – 0.001 of a millimetre.

Midland Tool and Design’s MD Darren Booton said: “The projects for the A380 have tested our ability to manufacture highly accurate components and we’ve come through with flying colours.

“That’s why we’ve been able to pick up several orders like this in recent years, and also from several other aerospace companies.”

The thriving firm, which has increased the workforce by 33% to 40 in the past two years, is also working on projects for automotive manufacturers, the Indian Government, and an installation similar to the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.

They are working towards Revision C of the prestigious AS9100 accreditation, which relates to the company’s performance, and covers aspects including configuration management, risk management and monitoring continuous improvement.

They are also targeting the SC21 standard, which provides independent verification of a company’s commitment to improving performance by keeping costs to a minimum without compromising quality.

Midland Tool and Design was established in 1969 and specialises in supplying precision components to a wide range of companies in aerospace, medical and automotive engineering.
